Road to Harar

Visiting Harar in 2010 was one of the main reasons i wanted to bring Kerry and Leah to Ethiopia… That time we flew – this required a little more driving…occasionally with no road…

Eep! Where’d the road go?

…but alway through insane scenery – 800m above sea level along the Awash river, up to 3000m and down to Harar’s more manageable 2200m or so..

Not *another* mountain pass..

I got excited at all the beautifully terraced newly planted coffee bushes. But turned all the plantings are Chat – “not seasonal and more money” our guide said. Couldn’t actually find Harar’s coffee plantings…

Terraced Chat..

Reminded us of Valley of a thousand hills in KZN. But these were thousands of Thabana Ntlenyana-sized mountains…

Some parts were bone dry – the next valley was flooded. Wierd.
